5.0 out of 5 stars Well-made fan truly is quiet, September 27, 2010

This is the third Panasonic Whisper-Quiet bathroom fan I have installed in one of my houses, and I've got to say, they are wonderful fans. Compared to the junky Broan and NuTone fans I've been replacing, these units are solidly constructed, wonderfully quiet, and worth the time and effort it takes to install them. There's a reason my unit came with a 3-year mechanical warranty and a 6-year motor warranty... these fans are built to last. And I like that I can actually hear myself think while I'm taking a shower.

This fan is indeed very very quiet - especially compared to the one that was originally installed in the house. It was efficient but had the sonic characteristics of a NASCAR engine.

The fan was simple to install. First, to find the old fan under the attic installation was a simple matter of turning it on, climbing up into the attic and locating the noise.

Next, shut the old fan off at the circuit breaker box. Remove.

Place the new fan in position and observe its footprint. It may be slightly larger and require cutting out a small slice of the ceiling drywall. If you've not done this before, it's no big deal. Just get an inexpensive drywall saw at any hardware or big box store. Be sure to spread a drop cloth or old sheet in the bathroom under the fan. If you have never cut dry wall before you will be astonished at the amount of dust even a short cut makes. Measure accurately for the opening size of your new fan, mark it, check your measure ment again, then cut.

Place the new fan in position, mark the locations to drill pilot holes for the mounting screws; drill and install the screws. I found a small ratchet type driver handy, but a stubby screwdriver will do.

Reattach the wiring and it's done.

For added convenience, I replaced the on/off wall switch with a Woods 59007 Decora 30-15-10-5 minute preset wall switch timer (Amazon). Using this, you can click a time, leave a steamy bathroom, and the fan will shut off automatically. You don't have to remember to go back and shut it off.

One last note. Be sure to properly size your prospective fan's capacity in CFM (cubic feet per minute) with the volume of your bathroom in cubic feet. The simple formula to do this is readily found online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product from a reputable manufacturer, January 12, 2011

Bought this fan (FV08VQ5) from Amazon during Xmas time and received the unit after New Year (took advantage of it's free shipping). This fan is to replace the otherwise noisy Broan Nu-Tone 80cfm fan that runs 24/7/365 in a high thermal efficiency house (built to 2004 code) to exhaust moisture and stale air, but obviously, it's more noisy than it's rated noise level (rated 1.1 sones, but I pretty much doubt it but would guess it to be around 2.0 sones or so due to motor hum).

Took a bit of time to get it to fit in between the joists (older broan is about 1" square smaller in size with beam reinforcement brackets that the slide mount was spot welded in, not like Pana which is screwed in (took the screw off to undo the slide mount bracket, which was a breeze).

Took a bit of time/effort to make things right before I was able to fire up the fan and wow! Was I impressed (about how low the noise level is)! With the previous Broan/Nu-Tone exhaust fan, our master bedroom next door can hear the motor humming throughout most of the day; and it becomes extremely annoying throughout the nite; this fan is barely perceivable when it's on and while I'm in the bathroom (where the fan is located), and not perceivable from the master bedroom nextdoor.

Tested the air draw with 2 slices of tissue and it "pulls" nicely (with sufficient air draw)

Mind you though: I'm an audiophile when acute hearing, and any fan/hum noise will definitely get to my nerves. This is definitely something I can definitely live with.

Lastly: this Panasonic fan is Energy Star rated (only draws 14.7Watts for 80cfm fan) meaning that it would go really easy on my electricity bills as opposed to that Broan (which was rated 120VAC/1.1Amps, or 132Watts equivalent).

Two thumbs enthusiastically up!
